Velvet Underground - Squeeze 1973

...or Squeeze some money out of Velvet Underground.
This album is the unholy grail in the Velvet Underground history, no original members, well, Moe Tucker was a member, but not included in the recording sessions. Doug Yule, a member of the band since the self titled record, Velvet Underground, where he replaced John Cale. Back to Squeeze, its not all bad, some good songs, some not so good,I think uneven is a good word for it. Its fair to say it's not a Velvet Underground album, in my opinion it lacks the Velvet magic(and most, if not all of its members), so it's a Doug Yule solo record under a more familiar band name. The album was produced by Doug Yule with some help from Ian Paice, known from Deep Purple, he also did the drums.

Oh well, the wikipedia article is quite good and you should read it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squeeze_(The_Velvet_Underground_album)

I hope this one will finally get reissued, it would be cool to have it in the collection without spending shitloads of money on ebay.

Enjoy and remember, it may be written Velvet Underground, but its pronounced Doug Yule.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - The Legendary A&M Sessions 65/66

Five songs, short and sweet, from the great Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. This is what they sounded like in the very beginning, before they went totally avangard. Great fuzzy blues with awesome vocals. If you are new to Beefheart, your next one to check out should be Safe as Milk, then Mirror Man Sessions and then the great and crazy Trout Mask Replica. They are easily available everywere. They are all well worth the money.

Removing 666

Got this on in the comment section:

"Dag E. Salsten said...

Hi Judas Eukaryote

Please remove your link to download the 666 album. Download is illegal and violates rules of copyright. I am manager of 666 and the man behind 666 LIVE albums on the label NO NOISE REDUCTION.

Mr Salsten."

The funny thing is that I was writing some stuff for my next 666 post, guess thats never gonna happen. Sure, its illegal to share copyrighted material, but at least I'm not selling a cdr with xeroxed covers and shit(or other mediocre bootlegs). I do not make any money on this, and those who do make money on bootlegs, they are the true assholes. Also, I hope that people who like what they hear do the right thing, and BUY the music. If they can find it that is. I hope you didn't download any of "my" stuff or any other criminal mp3 on the internet, I dont want you to loose any sleep at night.

If Mr. Manager reads this, I hope he can give us all a hint to where we can buy his stuff. The best would be if he made some new cd's, mastered, pressed and printed professionally (vinyl or silver cd). One disc, one track of each song, tree cd's with only ten songs on repeat is just to much. Then it could be worth something.

To bad we all cant be friends and enjoy music of all sorts, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Remember kids, buy music, support the scene and feed starving musicians and their managers.

D.R. Hooker Band - Armageddon

Yup. I'm back. I think. And with me this time is D.R. Hooker and band, this is the follow up album to the masterpiece The Truth. This record was released in 1979, but the recordings are from the time around when The Truth was recorded and released. The back cover says, WARNING: DEMO TAPES & ROUGH MIXES, should you save your precious ears? No no no, this is still good stuff, well worth listening too. The music itself is pretty much in the same vein in as The Truth, with some prog moves and crazy moog sounds. Thats it for now, maybe there will be a new post later this week.. Btw, the original press is very expensive, but cheap represses can be easily found at ebay.

And, this isn't my rip, big thanks to the original ripper.

Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo OST 1970

Another Jodorowsky soundtrack, this time to the fantastic western movie El Topo(the mole in english), which has fans such as John Lennon, David Lynch, Dennis Hopper and Marilyn Manson. The movie is filled with bizarre and sickening images, and a story that could be inspired by some old testament lunacy. Nice soundtrack for a great movie, in the same vein as Holy Mountain. If you haven't seen the movie, I command you, check it out!

About the cover art, I think these movieposters are sooo much cooler than the soundtrack cover art, so i decided to use the posters. Btw, kret is the polish word for mole. Did I ask for permission? Neh... but visist http://www.homework.com.pl/ for more fancy posters.

Mickey Newbury - Triad Studio Sessions, Eugene, OR,1991

Copy/paste from the web:

"In 1991, Newbury recorded some demo tracks at Triad Studios in Eugene, Oregon, as a favour to the previous owner. He wasn't satisfied with the tracks, mostly covers, and they were never released. But on the two occasions when he sings his own songs, he goes off into two- or three-song medleys, and these just may be some of the best stuff he ever did."

DigiMetal. Extreme something meets extreme other thing. Organized chaos. Norwegian. Fuzz and crazy space effects. Just words. Listen to the sounds. I didnt cut it into pieces since its kinda hard to know when and where, also, its best to listen to the whole monster(ca 38min) in one.

Maiden Voyage: A Wide Selection Of Grooves From Norway '66 - '76

This is truly a wide selection, the best and the weirdest from the Norwegian rock and jazz scene between 1966 - 76. Lots of great tracks and some not so good, most of it are from long out of print records and dusty archives. Its mostly jazzy fusion/rock/r'n'b stuff, a couple of covers and some film music, and a cool tape manipulation track from Arne Nordheim, who died not long ago. A review doesn't do this compilation justice, this is just something you have to listen to yourself. This compilation was released in 2002. Two others followed, and I might put them up later.

My favorite tracks are Misty Canyon, Wheels, Whine and Wail, Solar Plexus and of course Heaven and Hell, from the cult movie Himmel og Helvete, starring a young Lillebjørn Nilsen as a hash addict, a "true" drug horror story from 1969. Thats a surreal piece of Norwegian movie history worth hunting down. Hilarious propaganda. DUCK AND COVER!

Also worth mentioning are the great cover art by Tore Hansen, who usually write and illustrate childrens books.

Covenant - In Times Before The Light

More Norwegian black metal, but not nekro like Mayhem, this is a symphonic synth based classic by Covenant, or The Kovenant as they are known today. In Times Before The Light was released by a small label called Mordgrimm in 1995, and I think this was their only release. This is the original mix and straight from the original cd. Other version has also been released, a industrial circus version in 2002, with lots of new sounds and samples and a remastered version in 2007, with bonus tracks. I havent heard the latest one, so I cant comment on the sound. But the industrial circus version was a fun ride, and is worth checking out. Covenant released a couple of good albums after this on, but their latest was really bad and they are "working" on a follw-up, but dont get your hopes up, they have been "working" on that one for years, and I doubt we will hear it soon....

Mayhem - Pure Fucking Armaggedon

Warning: This recording is filthy and fucked up Norwegian black metal with über nekro sound and your ears may cry blood when listening to it.

Mayhem's first demo, Pure Fucking Armageddon, released in 1986. If you want this, you already know Mayhem and you don't need any introduction to them. If you don't know them, this is the wrong place to start, well, I'm not sure what the right one is, but you could try the legendary album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and read about them at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayhem_band.

Two Lectures By Nick Cave - The Secret Life Of The Love Song & The Flesh Made Word

The Secret Life of the Love Song is Nick Cave's personal guide to "what is" and "how to write" a love song. Originally written for the Vienna Poetry Festival 1998 and performed to great success at The Royal Festival Hall, London in 1999, this is a studio recording of that lecture. It includes five new recordings of the songs West Country Girl, People Ain't no Good, Sad Waters, Love Letter, and Far From Me. The Word Made Flesh is a spoken-word piece, re-recorded, originally written and performed for the BBC in 1996. There is a lot of references to god/jesus/the bible etc, although I'm no jesus-lover, far from it actually, I find it very interesting to hear what Nick Cave has to say about it and what his angle is. Hope you do to.

Martin Horntveth - Skull EP

Where to begin... Martin Horntveth is the drummer in Jaga Jazzist, and this is his solo project. Its pretty far from Jaga, but you can hear some influences in there somewhere. Its a bit hard to explain the music, its electronic cut up jazzy freak music. My advice is that you download, listen and judge yourself. This EP was released in 2003 and we are waiting for more. Einstürzende Neubautens first concert!

30 years ago Einstürzende Neubauten was born, and they played their first concert at a club called Moon on the 1st of April 1980. The lineup was very different from what i would be later on, and the sound and songs are pretty different too. I like to listen to this once in a while and enjoy the diversity in Neubautens music, from this to that, and whatever they are doing right now. Gotta love them. So I hope you can appreciate this fuzzy, but historical important recording of this great German band. Lets hope they keep going at least 30 years more.

Nine Inch Nails - PHM demo 1988

I'm back from the deep dreamless slumber called "without-the-great-Internet". And I bring you some NIN demos from before Pretty Hate Machine, the first official release of NIN. The demo was recorded in 1988(I think) and they don't really sound like the NIN we all love, but still, its cool to hear what Trent Reznor was doing back then. Actually, I think I enjoy this stuff more than his latest releases, but that's just me.... I hope you like it too. The lost Cosmos Episode!

This TV-interview was recorded in 1989 as a bonus to the VHS edition of the Cosmos series, why its not on the dvd edition, I don't know. Dr. Carl Sagan is interviewed by Ted Turner, and they talk about many of the themes from Cosmos, since its recorded 9 years after the original series a lot of things have changed. And now 21 years later, things have changed even more, so it may seem a bit dated, but we are still plagued by pollution, superstition and greed, so things are kinda the same, it just have new names. All in all, a great interview, lots of great stuff. I ripped this from youtube, so big thanks to the original poster, klockantre. There are nothing special happening in the video, so it works fine as audio only too.

Is It Rolling Bob? A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan

Bod Dylan plays Bob Dylan the best, most of the time, and Im not saying that this tribute is the best in the world, but its a nice, laidback reggae tribute to Dylan. Its kinda refreshing to hear these songs in reggae versions, so if you like Bob Dylan and/or reggae you should give it a try, if you are some sort of boring purist, stay away. This is a record best enjoyed in the sun or in good company, remember to bring beer or whatever you need to get in the mood for some dylanesque reggae.

Johnny Cash - American Outtakes Part 2

Part two of the Johnny Cash American Outtakes post. More great outtakes, this one has better sound than the other one, and some of the songs are so great that they should have been released officially. Well, they are still releasing albums post mortem, so it might happen. I Witnessed A Crime feat ZZ Tops Billy Gibbons are my favourite on this boot and worth the download time alone. The cover of Kris Kristofferson song To beat the Devil is also really good, btw, Kristoffersons original recording was dedicated to "John and June". The www says it was recorded in Rick Rubins livingroom betweein the 17. and 20. may, 1993.

Johnny Cash - American Outtakes Part 1

You know, this is almost as good as some of the official American Recordings, its stripped down as far as you can, only Johnny and his guitar. The sound is good(only some tapehiss), the tracklist is good, and his voice is still strong. Most of the covers "makes sense", not like on some of the rather strange choices on the later records. I think the recording is from 93 or 94, based on the songs and his voice. Also, Im pretty sure its Rick Rubin holding the mic. Its a bit confusing, since its two Cash boots with the same name, American Outtakes, but thats life, I will post the other one later, and that one is maybe the best of the two.
