I have returned / my new outfit

R.I.P Woody Guthrie

R.I.P Darth Maul, and a song about you

Here's to Quai-Gon Jinn and Kenobi too
And to all the good people that fought against you
Here's to the hearts and the hands of the men
That come with the force and are gone with the wind.

The truth is that I don't play the guitar and the force is weak in me, but I liked the pic and felt like to share and brag.

Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo OST 1970

Another Jodorowsky soundtrack, this time to the fantastic western movie El Topo(the mole in english), which has fans such as John Lennon, David Lynch, Dennis Hopper and Marilyn Manson. The movie is filled with bizarre and sickening images, and a story that could be inspired by some old testament lunacy. Nice soundtrack for a great movie, in the same vein as Holy Mountain. If you haven't seen the movie, I command you, check it out!

About the cover art, I think these movieposters are sooo much cooler than the soundtrack cover art, so i decided to use the posters. Btw, kret is the polish word for mole. Did I ask for permission? Neh... but visist http://www.homework.com.pl/ for more fancy posters.

Mickey Newbury - Triad Studio Sessions, Eugene, OR,1991

Copy/paste from the web:

"In 1991, Newbury recorded some demo tracks at Triad Studios in Eugene, Oregon, as a favour to the previous owner. He wasn't satisfied with the tracks, mostly covers, and they were never released. But on the two occasions when he sings his own songs, he goes off into two- or three-song medleys, and these just may be some of the best stuff he ever did."

KILLL - Live at Øya 2006

DigiMetal. Extreme something meets extreme other thing. Organized chaos. Norwegian. Fuzz and crazy space effects. Just words. Listen to the sounds. I didnt cut it into pieces since its kinda hard to know when and where, also, its best to listen to the whole monster(ca 38min) in one.

Check out www.b-o-r-g.org and www.myspace.com/killlnorway.

All the guys are known from other bands and projects, Martin Horntveth from Jaga Jazzist, Are Mokkelbost from Single Unit, Erlend Mokkelbost from J.R. Ewing and Espen T. Hangård from Noplacetohide.

Maiden Voyage: A Wide Selection Of Grooves From Norway '66 - '76

This is truly a wide selection, the best and the weirdest from the Norwegian rock and jazz scene between 1966 - 76. Lots of great tracks and some not so good, most of it are from long out of print records and dusty archives. Its mostly jazzy fusion/rock/r'n'b stuff, a couple of covers and some film music, and a cool tape manipulation track from Arne Nordheim, who died not long ago. A review doesn't do this compilation justice, this is just something you have to listen to yourself. This compilation was released in 2002. Two others followed, and I might put them up later.

My favorite tracks are Misty Canyon, Wheels, Whine and Wail, Solar Plexus and of course Heaven and Hell, from the cult movie Himmel og Helvete, starring a young Lillebjørn Nilsen as a hash addict, a "true" drug horror story from 1969. Thats a surreal piece of Norwegian movie history worth hunting down. Hilarious propaganda. DUCK AND COVER!

Also worth mentioning are the great cover art by Tore Hansen, who usually write and illustrate childrens books.

Covenant - In Times Before The Light

More Norwegian black metal, but not nekro like Mayhem, this is a symphonic synth based classic by Covenant, or The Kovenant as they are known today. In Times Before The Light was released by a small label called Mordgrimm in 1995, and I think this was their only release. This is the original mix and straight from the original cd. Other version has also been released, a industrial circus version in 2002, with lots of new sounds and samples and a remastered version in 2007, with bonus tracks. I havent heard the latest one, so I cant comment on the sound. But the industrial circus version was a fun ride, and is worth checking out. Covenant released a couple of good albums after this on, but their latest was really bad and they are "working" on a follw-up, but dont get your hopes up, they have been "working" on that one for years, and I doubt we will hear it soon....

Mayhem - Pure Fucking Armaggedon

Warning: This recording is filthy and fucked up Norwegian black metal with über nekro sound and your ears may cry blood when listening to it.

Mayhem's first demo, Pure Fucking Armageddon, released in 1986. If you want this, you already know Mayhem and you don't need any introduction to them. If you don't know them, this is the wrong place to start, well, I'm not sure what the right one is, but you could try the legendary album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and read about them at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayhem_band.

The source for this rip is a cd bootleg made ca ten years ago.

Two Lectures By Nick Cave - The Secret Life Of The Love Song & The Flesh Made Word

The Secret Life of the Love Song is Nick Cave's personal guide to "what is" and "how to write" a love song. Originally written for the Vienna Poetry Festival 1998 and performed to great success at The Royal Festival Hall, London in 1999, this is a studio recording of that lecture. It includes five new recordings of the songs West Country Girl, People Ain't no Good, Sad Waters, Love Letter, and Far From Me. The Word Made Flesh is a spoken-word piece, re-recorded, originally written and performed for the BBC in 1996. There is a lot of references to god/jesus/the bible etc, although I'm no jesus-lover, far from it actually, I find it very interesting to hear what Nick Cave has to say about it and what his angle is. Hope you do to.

Martin Horntveth - Skull EP

Where to begin... Martin Horntveth is the drummer in Jaga Jazzist, and this is his solo project. Its pretty far from Jaga, but you can hear some influences in there somewhere. Its a bit hard to explain the music, its electronic cut up jazzy freak music. My advice is that you download, listen and judge yourself. This EP was released in 2003 and we are waiting for more. I also have his first solo EP, Fast Motion, I you want me to share it, give me some feedback in the comments.

Einstürzende Neubautens first concert!

30 years ago Einstürzende Neubauten was born, and they played their first concert at a club called Moon on the 1st of April 1980. The lineup was very different from what i would be later on, and the sound and songs are pretty different too. I like to listen to this once in a while and enjoy the diversity in Neubautens music, from this to that, and whatever they are doing right now. Gotta love them. So I hope you can appreciate this fuzzy, but historical important recording of this great German band. Lets hope they keep going at least 30 years more.

Nine Inch Nails - PHM demo 1988

I'm back from the deep dreamless slumber called "without-the-great-Internet". And I bring you some NIN demos from before Pretty Hate Machine, the first official release of NIN. The demo was recorded in 1988(I think) and they don't really sound like the NIN we all love, but still, its cool to hear what Trent Reznor was doing back then. Actually, I think I enjoy this stuff more than his latest releases, but that's just me.... I hope you like it too. This probably isn't the rarest stuff floating around the www, but the sound quality and the "historical value" makes it worth sharing.

The lost Cosmos Episode!

This TV-interview was recorded in 1989 as a bonus to the VHS edition of the Cosmos series, why its not on the dvd edition, I don't know. Dr. Carl Sagan is interviewed by Ted Turner, and they talk about many of the themes from Cosmos, since its recorded 9 years after the original series a lot of things have changed. And now 21 years later, things have changed even more, so it may seem a bit dated, but we are still plagued by pollution, superstition and greed, so things are kinda the same, it just have new names. All in all, a great interview, lots of great stuff. I ripped this from youtube, so big thanks to the original poster, klockantre. There are nothing special happening in the video, so it works fine as audio only too.

Is It Rolling Bob? A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan

Bod Dylan plays Bob Dylan the best, most of the time, and Im not saying that this tribute is the best in the world, but its a nice, laidback reggae tribute to Dylan. Its kinda refreshing to hear these songs in reggae versions, so if you like Bob Dylan and/or reggae you should give it a try, if you are some sort of boring purist, stay away. This is a record best enjoyed in the sun or in good company, remember to bring beer or whatever you need to get in the mood for some dylanesque reggae.

Johnny Cash - American Outtakes Part 2

Part two of the Johnny Cash American Outtakes post. More great outtakes, this one has better sound than the other one, and some of the songs are so great that they should have been released officially. Well, they are still releasing albums post mortem, so it might happen. I Witnessed A Crime feat ZZ Tops Billy Gibbons are my favourite on this boot and worth the download time alone. The cover of Kris Kristofferson song To beat the Devil is also really good, btw, Kristoffersons original recording was dedicated to "John and June". The www says it was recorded in Rick Rubins livingroom betweein the 17. and 20. may, 1993.

Johnny Cash - American Outtakes Part 1

You know, this is almost as good as some of the official American Recordings, its stripped down as far as you can, only Johnny and his guitar. The sound is good(only some tapehiss), the tracklist is good, and his voice is still strong. Most of the covers "makes sense", not like on some of the rather strange choices on the later records. I think the recording is from 93 or 94, based on the songs and his voice. Also, Im pretty sure its Rick Rubin holding the mic. Its a bit confusing, since its two Cash boots with the same name, American Outtakes, but thats life, I will post the other one later, and that one is maybe the best of the two.

D.R. Hooker - The Truth

The Truth is.... this album is awesome, its actually one of my favorite personal discoveries from the the last couple of years. Originally released as a private pressing in 1972, never picked up by a record company and quickly forgotten, until some record collectors got their hands on this psychedelic masterpiece. It got traded and the records underground fame started to grow. Later it was rereleased on cd and vinyl and its now fairly easy to get hold of, check ebay. The music is groovy psychedelic rock with some great melodies and the fantastic voice of D.R Hooker. The album ends with a message played backwards: "Life is a mystery, of course it's true. Look for the answer, recorded clues". It seems like this is a "solo record" with hired musicians, D.R. Hooker released a follow up album with a new lineup in 1974, called Armageddon. If you are not able to enjoy the song Forge Your Own Chains, call a doctor, its something wrong with you.

D.R. Hooker passed away in january last year.

Btw, if you have D.R. Hooker - Rain on the Moon (1987) and want to share, please leave me a message in the commentfield. Thanks.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Jewels

Einstürzende Neubauten, the German granddaddies of true industrial music, active since 1. April 1980 and still going strong. This is the original Jewels recordings, not the same version that was released later on cd and vinyl in 2008. This was a part of the supporter project, and was offered as a exclusive freebie to the supporters, they released one song each month. Later they re-recorded some of the stuff and mixed and remastered it for a proper cd/vinyl release. The linernotes on the album really describes the process behind the recording, dreams inspiring the lyrics and the "dave cards" instructing the use and style of instruments and recording method. You can read the really good linernotes over at http://neubauten.org/pages/linernotes/thejewels_eng.html

The covers are leftovers from a school project i did back in 2007. Remember to support the band and buy their records, its worth the money and the band can continue making great music. neubauten.org.

Im not going to write so much about Sex Pistols(since every music lover knows the story), just that this show is from August 29, 1976, before they recorded their first and only album. Cosmos Soundtrack

Carl Sagan is my hero, he is awesome! Cosmos is an american tv series from 1980, Carl Sagan was the writer and host, its about science, space and all the goodstuff that comes with it, it had a cool soundtrack too, a nice mix between classical music and synth based music from Vangelis. And of course some other tracks inbetween. If you havent seen the series you should run and get it. Well, this post is about the soundtrack, enjoy it and space out.

"The musical content of Cosmos seemed to create a message of it's own - almost as though it were the collective intelligence of the universe pleasantly calling our attention to the lessons at hand. [this]... expresses, simply and eloquently, our intentions in selecting music for the thirteen hours of the Cosmos television series. As with the golden phonograph record placed on board the Voyager spacecraft, bearing a sampling of "Earth's Greatest Hits", we included a variety of musical traditions and genres. Many hours were spent exploring the music of unfamiliar composers and performers, and considering how old favorites would enhance the thoughtful words and rich visuals ofthe series. Finding the music for Cosmos was in itself a voyage of discovery. We hope you will share in that experience, enjoy the music of this album and then sample the original works from which these pieces were excerpted. It was always our intention in Cosmos that the images and the music would be as important as the words, and that the series would speak to that part of us in which the heart and mind are one"

The Rape Of The Holy Trinity (Hot Records Compilation CD, Vol.1)

This is a compilation released on Shagrath's(from Dimmu Borgir) label Hot Records, it's packed with great Norwegian black and thrash metal and one synth... thing. Some of these bands made it and some of them are forgotten today. The back of the cd says the tracks are unreleased/remastered/remixed, so I guess they are somewhat rare. I decided to not include some of the tracks, the reasons are listed in the short track-by-track review.

So enjoy this cool compilation of what black metal sounded like 13+ years ago. The cd was released in 1997.

Black out
Judas Eukaryote

Tracklist and short track-by-track review and lineup:

01. Intro
All black metal records must have a intro, its the law!

02. Dødheimsgard - Symptom
I love the Satanic Art EP, so its cool to hear an early version. Its very raw and the Twin Peaks samples are gone.

Lineup:
Vicotnik - guitar
Aldrahn - vocal
Apollyon - drums
Cerberus - bass

03. Mundanus Imperium - Ode To The Nightsky
I posted the same recording earlier, so this one isnt included in the zip file, but check out the earlier post, its cool stuff.

04. Aura Noir - Heavens on Fire
I like this black thrash stuff, and this is a cool venom cover.

Lineup:
Aggressor - bass, vocal
Blasphemer - guitar
Apollyon - drums

05. Old Man's Child - A Kingdom Which Malice Embrace
Old Mans Child is a ok band, not my favourite, but its a nice track thats fits in on this compilation

Lineup:
Galder - guitar, vocal

06. Dimmu Borgir - Devils Path
Not included, this is not rare at all, its sold in a thousand different packages.

07 Enthral - Awaiting the Rise of the Forestgod
A long great track of by-the-book Norwegian black metal recorded in 1995. The guitar player is females, so thats what makes this one special I guess. They released some albums, but never really made it big.

Lineup:
G. Bratseth - guitar, bass
K. Hektoen - drums, vocal, synth

08. Mundanus Imperium - Winds of the Frozen Stars

same as track 4

09. Covenant - Dragonstorms
The first Covenant record is hard to get hold of, and thats to bad, since its really good, not as amazing as Nexus Polaris, but still... Dragonstorms are a great introduction to the In Times Before The Light album. Might post it later.

Lineup:
Nagash - vocal, drums
Blackheart - guitar, bass

10. Starkness - Unto the Darkly Shining World
Starkness is Shagraths(from Dimmu Borgir) solo synth project, its super cheezy, its cheezier than early Mortiis and Satyrs "Wongraven" project put together. Fun to listen to once, but not something you put on repeat. I think this is the only Starkness track that has been released.

Lineup:
Shagrath - synth, vocal
kimberly Goss - vocal

11. Nocturnal Breed - Dead Dominion
Hard rocking black thrash metal. Great. Members from Dimmu Borgir.

Lineup:
S.A. Destroyer - bass, vocal
Ed Damnator - guitar
Bitch Molester - keyboard

12. Old Man's Child - Black Magic
Slayer cover, really cool.

Lineup:
Galder - vocal, guitar

13. Aura Noir - The Tower of Limbs and Fever
More black thrash, still great. Darkthrones drummer Fenriz on vocals!

Lineup:
Fenriz - vocal
Aggressor - guitar, bass
Apollyon - drums

14. Nocturnal Breed - Raping the Angels
Awesome track! Nice end to great compilation.

Lineup:
S.A. Destroyer - bass, vocal
Ed Damnator - guitar
Bitch Molester - keyboard

Sam Gopal - Escalator feat. Lemmy

I dont know so much abouth this record, so I decided to copy/paste the wikipedia article.

"Sam Gopal (also called Sam Gopal's Dream) is an underground British Psychedelic rock band.

The band is named after its founder, Sam Gopal, born in Malaysia. From the age of seven, he played tabla, a northern Indian percussion that replaced drums in the band.

On 28 April 1967, the band performed at The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, a UK Underground event organised by the International Times at Alexandra Palace. The line-up was Sam Gopal, Mick Hutchinson and Pete Sears. Other performing bands included Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, Savoy Brown, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Soft Machine, and The Move. Sam Gopal Dream played at the UFO Club, The Electric Garden in Covent Garden (later to become Middle Earth), The Roundhouse, and Happening 44. They later played the Christmas on Earth Show at Olympia in London with Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. Jimi Hendrix later sat in with the original Sam Gopal Dream at London's Speakeasy Club.

After the original band broke up in 1968, Sam formed a new line-up which included vocalist, Lemmy. He was a singer-guitarist with Sam Gopal, before becoming the bassist of Hawkwind and, in 1975, the founder, singer and bassist of Motörhead.

Sam Gopal's album Escalator was recorded in 1968."

Escaltor is one groovy album featuring the almighty Lemmy, so sit back and enjoy.

Madder Mortem - Misty Sleep Demo

Five songs and 30 minutes of gothic metal from the norwegian band Madder Mortem, the demo isn't bad at all, actually its pretty good, and they got themselves a record deal with Century Media. This demo was recorded in 1997 and released the same year, only 500 ex was pressed. Its a nice mix between female vocals, angry guitars and some acoustic ones, and it all sounds more or less professional. They released their debut album Mercury two years later. They are still going strong and worth checking out.

Enjoy

David Bowie Live @ BBC Radio Theater, London, June 27. 2000

This is the bonus disc that came with the limited edition of "Bowie at the Beeb". Its a live recording of a small concert they did for some few lucky members of the official David Bowie fan club. The setlist is great and band sounds great, wish I could be there....

The Bowie at the Beeb compilation is great, lots of good stuff from 68-72. Its worth the money it costs.

An Evening Of Lucky Pierre Music 2002

Kevin McMahon started out with his band "Lucky Pierre" in the 70s in Cleveland, Ohio and he has since played with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and played support live for David Bowie. Lucky Pierre has released a lot of 7", a 12", one album, and last year, a compilation. Under the name "Prick" he released one amazing album on Trent Reznors's Nothing Records in 1995, in 2002 he released a second Prick album called "The Wreckard". His side projects "Fear of Blue" and "(sic)" finally got released on cd last year. All of his releases, except the first "Prick" album, has been independently released.

The "An Evening Of Lucky Pierre Music" concert is a celebration of his career from start until 2002, and its mostly acoustic, and not his usual pop-industrial-glam-rock-ish sound. The quality of his song writing skills still ring clear trough, and the show is pleasure to listen to from start to end. The sound is not bad, considering its a audience recording.

I played around with the program Gimp and made some covers to, hope you like it.

Btw, there are some skipping on three songs, and they where there when i got my copy.

The Beautiful People - Sedated Times EP

Today, naive electro punk from Norway. This is the band that changed name to "SexBeat", but ended up with the name "120 days" not long after. Three great tracks on this EP, which are their first release. It was released in 2004 and the band got to play the norwegian Zoom-tour for talented bands, I saw them once and they where a great live band to. Not sure what they are up to right now, and I dont think I care, the "120 days" album was a disappointment.

Well, enjoy and dont be afraid to comment

Exposed demo 1997

This is grungy heavy metal from Løten, Norway. I think this is the bands second demo, they released one album, Kneel, on FaceFront in 2000. They didnt reinvent heavy metal or anything on this demo, but its still cool and heavy. This band transformed into Section Down, and they released their debut album earlier this year, check them out for more cool music. www.sectiondown.com.

The Meads of Asphodel - Jihad

British black metal with a middle eastern theme? Sure, and its awesome! They have used samples from prayers, tanks, classical music and more to make a short but sweet EP about Jihad and Islam. Not really sure what the message, if any, behind it all is supposed to be, but who cares, it sounds good.

It was released in 2002 on a split record with norwegian Mayhem.

Charlie dont surf!

Charles Manson's "Lie - The Love And Terror Cult" album.
Just adding this oddity, cult leader Charles Manson's attempt to get famous before the killings, something he didn't achieve, but we all know who he is anyway. To bad people had to die. Not much to say, recorded on the Manson Ranch in 1967-68 and the master tapes lost in obscurity until someone released it to cash in on his "fame" in 1970. Its straight forward hippie guitar jam music, and some of the songs are actually pretty good.

Lemmy plays country!

Well, among others things, on this record from 2000 he's playing coversongs with Slim Jim and Danny B. Johnny Cash, Elvis, Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins get their songs played by the coolest guy in hard rock, and it sounds cool, Lemmy's versions are true to the originals and not just some Motorhead-ish versions. I think it safe to say that this tribute to the roots of rock n roll, is coming straight from the heart. Like Motorhead, this music is also beer-friendly.

Hope you like it

Ulver - Uno sountrack

This is the Ulver part of the Uno soundtrack, a dark and atmospheric score, I decided to not add the rest since it mostly suck. Ulver is a shapeshifting beast from Norway, leaving their black metal roots to do electronic music and such. Im having a hard time deciding what version of the band i prefer. Btw, this is not a good place to start if you are new to the band, if you like metal, start with, "Bergtatt", and if you like electronica, start with "Perdition City", and if you like something in between and/or William Blake, check out "Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell". Its all good! More Ulver post to come in near future.

Im not going to bother posting the cover, its just a ugly picture of the actors in the movie.

Madrugada live in Berlin 2001

Norways favorite melancholic rock band, before they became really big. A bootleg recorded Planetarium am Insular, Berlin, 26.03.2001, the sound is pretty good and so is performance by the band. My bet is that this concert was on the tour for their second album "The Nightly Disease".

If you are not familiar with Madrugada you have to check out their two first albums, "Industrial Silence" and The "Nightly Disease", both masterpieces and a good place to begin. Madrugada disbanded after finishing theirs last album, after the tragic death of the guitarist, Robert Burås, in 2007.

Blixa Bargeld's Rede/Speech live in Paris

Einsturzende Neubauten front man Blixa Bargeld has a solo live concept called Rede/Speech, its only him and four footpedals that allow him to loop his voice. With this tool he builds up melodies and soundscapes. He makes songs about the solar system, the DNA sequence of angels and printing machines. There is also a beautiful rendition of the song Johnny Guitar.

I think the show was recorded in 2005.

The sound isn't perfect, still,in my mind this is great fun from a great man. I think this is the one and only acapella stuff i ever have enjoyed. Get the Rede/Speech dvd, its so much better to SEE it.

Single Unit stuff....

Single Unit is Are Mokkelbost's one man band, he has released one album on Jester Records called "Family of Forces" in 2001 and a 7" called "Passion Pirates and Parasites" on Synesthetic Recordings in 2002. The 7" has three tracks that are exclusive to it, all of these and a live recording can be downloaded from this blog. The bitrate isn't very high on the live recording, this is because the source was the same. The tracks from the 7" are encoded in a higher bitrate, another positive thing is that they are not ripped from the 7", but from the master recording.

I should try to explain what Single Unit sound like, its fast and cut-up electronica mixed with fuzz guitar, usually no vocals. Kinda like a fucked up Aphex Twin beaten up with a fuzz guitar. Its only one way to find out if its you thing, try it out, download and listen, its norwegian music at its best.

Check out more Single Unit and other stuff over at http://www.b-o-r-g.org, Killl is highly recommended. I will probably make a Killl post later....

Mundanus Imperium(aka Nattefall) - Ode to the Nightsky

I dont have much info on this band,I just know they are from Hamar, Norway. The Mundanus Imperium demo is great, mid 90's symphonic black metal, in the vein of Covenant, Dimmu Borgir and Arcturus. If you like symphonic, atmospheric black metal with hints of classical music, you will like this.

They got a record deal, but changed style, they got Jørn Lande on vocals and started to play power metal or something. They release one album in 1998 before they disbanded, called The Spectral Spheres Coronation. To bad the band didn't continue with the style from the demo, it could have been just as good as the bands i mentioned earlier.

From the cover:
"This is the re-press of the Nattefall "Ode to the Nightsky" demo'96."
